Crochet Sample Swatch Interlocking crochet – Double Filet Crochet – Intermeshing Crochet

This design uses the technique of intermeshing crochet – double filet crochet, and is intended for a 20×20 inch throw pillow/cushion. The sample swatch represents one quarter of the overall design, and was not only necessary to determine the ultimate size of the finished project, but also to work out the pattern for the design. This proved a lot easier that I had originally thought it would be.

The above design chart was adapted from an old hand drawn copy of the chart shown below. I am unaware of the origin of the old chart.

My sample swatch measures 10¼”x10” (not blocked). I used a 4mm crochet hook and Double Knitting yarn, left over from a previous projects.

This design is reversible.

Crochet Geometric Design – Interlocking crochet – Double Filet Crochet – Intermeshing Crochet

I have once again been experimenting with geometric designs using the technique of intermeshing –double filet crochet. The inspiration for the above design came from the chart below, which I found in a box of old charts. I think it was a machine knitting chart at one time.

In my opinion, the experiment has turned out very well, and I intend to use the design to make an Afghan. But I think this would also be a great design for a throw cushion/pillow.

My sample swatch measures 19.5” X 13” I used a 4.mm crochet hook and DK yarn left over from a previous projects. Unfortunately, I ran out of black yarn and had to substitute navy yarn in order to complete the design.

This design is reversible.

Tapestry Crochet 2

Since my first tentative footsteps into the world of tapestry crochet, I have not had the time to further my attempt at mastering the technique. I have done very little about improving on my knowledge of the subject, and I have also not had any practice. I therefore still do not feel proficient enough to attempt a project.

Recently, I came across a new/different twist on the single crochet stitch, called a modified single crochet. It would appear that the main benefit of using this modified stitch is that it allows you to create straight vertical stitches/lines, unlike the regularly single crochet which creates a definite diagonal slant. The finished fabric also has horizontal lines which I’m not quite sure that I like.

The Basic Modified Stitch

My first attempt at tapestry crochet was worked with two different coloured yarns. So for this attempt, I decided to try three different coloured yarns. Unfortunately, although the modified stitch was easy enough to get used to, I found it very difficult to ensure that the carried yarn is not seen. I also got into the most awful tangle with the yarns, which meant a lot of time was wasted de-tangling, and although I haven’t quite managed to banish the chaos yet, the video below was a great help.

These videos are a part of a series of 11 videos called “Tapestry Crochet for Beginners” by Alltapestrycrochet.com. I have only seen two of the videos but intend to watch all the others, as I need all the help I can get!

Crochet Flower Motif

I was given the instructions (which consists entirely of the scrappy diagram below) for this motif by a friend. It was used by her mother to make a beautiful evening jacket. Neither my friend nor her mother knew of it’s origins but thought that it came from a rather old book of crochet patterns.

The most interesting thing about this motif is that it is worked from the outside in? Most crochet motifs are worked by forming a very small ring in the centre and working out to the edge of the finished motif. This motif starts with a large outer ring of 48 chains, then the inner part of the diagram is worked, and each of the seven chain loops are joined at the centre…

…to form a small motif.

The double crochets and picots are then worked around the outer edge to finish the motif.

The finished motifs are then linked by crocheting together at the picots. This is a huge plus in my book, as I hate sewing motifs together!

This is a beautiful little motif, which makes a very delicate looking fabric that would be perfect for shawls, stoles, shrugs or anything that would benefit from being worked in light lacy fabric.

Crochet Motif – Double Filet Crochet – Interlocking crochet – Intermeshing Crochet

This motif forms the front of a cover for a heat pad which, when finished, will have a back made of navy toweling fabric. As is normally the case with Double Filet Crochet/Interlocking crochet/Intermeshing Crochet, the fabric/motif is reversible.

Which I tweaked a little and came up with this chart to work from, using the technique of Double Filet Crochet/Interlocking crochet/Intermeshing Crochet.

Chart

The finished motif measured 12.5″ x 12.5″, which is slightly smaller than required. So I worked a further row of filet all around the motif in order to make the piece up to the required measurements to cover the heat pad.

 

To make my motif:
Yarn Type: DK Acrylic knitting yarn left over from a previous project, in red and navy.
Needles: 4.00mm crochet hook.

Tapestry Crochet

I recently saw a portrait of an obviously much loved granddaughter, worked in tapestry crochet. I was so impressed by the portrait that I decided I would try to master the art. I assumed it would be a very simple matter, but it turned out to be a little more complicated, as there are several ways to produce tapestry crochet.

Normally, tapestry crochet is done with single crochet stitches. However, the slip stitch, half double, and double crochet stitches can also be used.
The yarn not currently being worked is carried inside the stitches, dropped and picked up when needed, and colours are changed before the stitch is completed. When switching between colours, the yarn can become very tangled, and I have yet to find a satisfactory way to deal with this. I just stop periodically and untwist the yarn.
Tighter stitches produce a stiffer fabric with well hidden carried colours, while more loose stitches show the carried colours and produce a fabric with drape.

The Basic Technique:

The fabric produced using single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet is slightly twisted with slanted design motifs. If you’re right-handed, the fabric/design twists/slants to the right. If you’re left handed, the fabric/design twists/slants to the left. I prefer to use the slip stitch, as the resulting tapestry crochet fabric looks more like fabric woven on a loom, instead of crocheted with a hook.

Firstly, I worked the design using slip stitch. The edges of the motif are very defined and the motif is relatively straight. I then repeated the design using a normal double crochet stitch. As can clearly be seen, the edges of the motif are less defined and have a definite slant to the right (I’m right-handed).

In my opinion, tapestry crochet is best worked in the round. However, you can obtain the good results when working flat if you cut the yarn at the end of each row and only work on the right side. This of course will mean weaving in an awful lot of ends.

Normally, when working tapestry crochet fabric flat, one row is worked on the right side and the next row is worked on the wrong side. This results in ridged fabric with a rather jagged edged design motif. I found a number of techniques online that claim to combat/correct this, such as crocheting backwards or crocheting one row with the right hand then the next row with the left hand. I cannot comment on the success or failure of these techniques, as I found all of them to be quite impossible to master.

Working tapestry crochet is very additive. Once started, I simply could not put it down. I will continue to practice and try to complete a project when I am sufficiently proficient.

Crochet Hexagon Motif

It’s a new year, time for a tidy up or a clear out? I decided to have a clear out of some of the small scraps of yarn in my stash. However, when I came to it, I just could not do it! There must be something I could do with the scraps of yarn instead of throwing them out? The only thing that came to mind was granny squares. I’m not fond of the traditional granny square for many reasons, including the fact that you have to sew them together. I especially dislike the overly colourful variety.

I do, however, like geometric shapes. So when I found this particular design…….

I was quite excited, despite the fact that I would have to sew them together!

The yarn scraps are 4 ply. I used only three colours (quite muted), but decided to add further interest by using yarns of different textures. The peach coloured yarn is scrunchy and knobbly, the grey yarn is smooth and silky with a slight sheen, and the black yarn has a firm texture. All three yarns are acrylic. I think the result is quite pleasing, and although I ran out of all three yarns after only seven motifs, I intend to add to this scrap project every time suitable scraps come along.
